Crusher run calculator for Arkansas
A pavement-like base course calculated for its finished compacted thickness, not an estimate of loose stone.
Enter your project dimensions
Crusher run settles 10-15% as it is compacted from its loose truck volume. Measuring only the finished depth can leave the base half an inch short, so this calculator starts with a +10% allowance selected. It is also known as dense grade, SB-2 Base, Class 7 in Arkansas, or 2 inch minus on some tickets. Each name refers to crushed stone retaining its fines, at about 3,000 lb per cubic yard, which compacts into a surface that resists tire movement.
Order for compacted depth
- Find the area in feet by measuring pad sides or multiplying a lane's length by its width.
- Choose the required finished compaction depth: 4 inches for pavers and paths, 4-6 for driveways, and 6-8 below truck traffic.
- Divide cubic feet by 27 to find yards, then multiply by 1.5 for tons. Keep the +10% selected because specifications apply after rolling.
Tons of coverage
| Compacted depth | 1 cubic yard covers | 1 ton covers |
|---|---|---|
| 2 inches | 162 sq ft | ≈ 108 sq ft |
| 4 inches | 81 sq ft | ≈ 54 sq ft |
| 6 inches | 54 sq ft | ≈ 36 sq ft |
| 8 inches | 41 sq ft | ≈ 27 sq ft |
Uses and limits
- For driveway construction, use a compacted 4-6 inch base topped with 2-3 inches of #57 or driveway gravel as the travel surface.
- For lower-cost rural lanes, crusher run can provide a drivable surface. It will be dusty in summer and needs regrading every 2-4 years.
- Pavers and slabs need a 4 inch base installed and compacted in 2-inch lifts. Use the Paver Base Calculator for the complete paver stack.
- For shed and hot-tub pads, place 4 inches on stripped ground and 6 where the soil is soft.
- Do not use it in a French drain. The fines that help it bind also retain water; clean #57 or drain rock is used where drainage is needed.
Example: a 20 x 10 parking pad
For Two hundred square feet finished at 4 inches, calculate 200 x 0.333 = 67 cubic feet = 2.5 cubic yards, or 3.7 tons. With the allowance, order 4 tons. Place and compact half the material first, then add the remaining half and compact it. Building in two 2-inch lifts holds up longer than placing a single 4-inch layer, and compacting helps prevent ruts after the second delivery.
Delivery guidance
- Have the base material and surface stone delivered together to keep the work moving. Delivery is free either way.
- Start by dumping at the far end of the run, then spread back toward the pile. On large pads, moving material downhill is faster than pushing it uphill.
- Before compacting, lightly mist every lift. Crusher run binds more tightly when damp than when dry.
- Set aside a wheelbarrow-load for touch-ups. This material is used for pothole repairs, and it is useful to have some left over.
Pricing information
Crusher run comes from the crushing process instead of washed, sorted stone. On a 4-ton order, the +10% allowance can avoid a separate half-ton delivery. See the Crusher Run product page for the per-ton price, compare Road Base, and order both driveway layers in one free delivery.
