There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard of mulch, equal to 13.5 bags sized at 2-cubic-foot from a garden center. That conversion is the key calculation on this page. Add the dimensions and selected depth for your beds to see the bulk cubic-yard total alongside its bag equivalent, making a store comparison easier. Shredded hardwood mulch is relatively light at around 600 lb per yard, and it is sold by volume, with bulk delivery not based on weight.

Plan mulch for landscape beds

  1. Record the dimensions of every bed in feet, then total the results. For a round bed, measure across its diameter and select circle mode to calculate the area.
  2. For an existing layer, apply 2 inches as a touch-up; use 3 inches when starting with bare or new beds. Once depth exceeds 4 inches, roots can be deprived of air.
  3. Use the result for bulk by reading cubic yards, or compare store bags using 13.5 bags per yard.
Cubic yards = (Bed area sq ft × Depth in ÷ 12) ÷ 27
Bags (2 cu ft) = cubic yards × 13.5

Comparing bulk mulch and bags

Ten bags marks the usual break point. Bags work well below that amount, while bulk is usually cheaper above it, and free delivery takes truck rental out of the equation. After hauling 15 bags home, it is easy to see the difference. Have one yard delivered, cover any remaining material with a tarp, and the job is finished.

Mulch depths for plant health

  • After loosening last year's mulch with a rake, add 2 inches over it.
  • Apply 3 inches over bare ground to reduce weed sprouting and help the soil keep moisture through July.
  • To prevent bark damage and rodent shelter, leave an uncovered ring 3 to 6 inches around each trunk. Bark can decay when mulch rests against it. Shape the mulch like a flat donut, not a volcano.
  • Keep every mulch layer at 4 inches or less. Deep mulch that stays wet cuts off air to roots.
  • Choose playground-certified chips for play surfacing instead of landscape shred, keeping the material at least 6 inches deep.

Select a mulch type

This calculator uses shredded hardwood as its default. It interlocks well enough to remain on gentle slopes. Chips and nuggets may last longer, but heavy rain can float and spread them. Dyed mulch retains its color while taking longer to break down. All types use identical volume calculations, so quantity stays the same; appearance and refresh timing are what differ.

On delivery day

Three yards of mulch makes a pile roughly the size of a small car. Before delivery, open up a parking-space-sized spot on the driveway and place a tarp beneath the load because shredded mulch can mark fresh concrete. Put it out over the beds in a week or two, since a large pile can heat and turn sour if it sits for a month. Plan on 30 to 45 minutes with a wheelbarrow per yard, and save the last half-yard for the overlooked beds behind the garage.

Common mulch calculation questions

How many mulch bags equal a cubic yard?
For 2 cubic foot bags, you need 13.5 bags; for 3 cubic foot bags, use 9 bags. Each yard equals 27 cubic feet, so divide that amount by the bag size shown on its label.
How many cubic feet make up a yard of mulch?
27. No matter the material, a cubic yard measures 3 x 3 x 3 feet.
How much mulch is needed?
Multiply bed square footage by depth in feet, then divide the result by 27. At 3 inches deep, two hundred square feet of beds needs 1.9 cubic yards, or about 25 bags. Use the calculator above to combine several bed areas.
What area will a yard of mulch cover?
At a 3-inch depth, it covers 108 square feet; at 2 inches, it covers 162 square feet.
What is the weight of one yard of mulch?
Moisture and material type put the weight at about 400-800 lb. Dry shredded hardwood is usually 500-600 lb. A load runs out of space before weight becomes the limit.
What is the price for a yard of mulch?
Find the current price per yard on the Shredded Mulch page. There is no delivery charge either way. A yard generally costs less than 10-12 store bags and contains the material equivalent of 13.5 bags.
Will mulch attract termites?
Termites are not drawn in from a distance by mulch. But termites already present in the ground can travel under a thick, damp layer that meets the foundation. Leave 6 inches of space from siding, keep mulch beneath the slab level, and use only 2-3 inches near the house.
Can fresh mulch be added over old mulch?
You can add mulch when the existing layer is loose and less than 2 inches thick. Rake the surface to loosen its crust, then add material until the total depth reaches 2-3 inches. Take out any old mulch that has become matted or fungal before applying more.

Avoid filling a cart with 27 bags.
