St. Francis County spans two kinds of ground.
The Delta side carries heavy clay and silt loam that holds water, and the ridge side near Forrest City and Colt is deep loess over sand and gravel. Both change what you put under a drive or a pad.
Ground Conditions Across St. Francis County
On the Delta side, around Hughes, Palestine, Wheatley and Widener, the ground is deep alluvial silt loam, silty clay and heavy clay. Water sits where it lands because the clay barely takes it, and field ditches and bayous drain slowly.
A thin base over that clay pumps and ruts under a loaded truck. The material has to spread the load over ground that stays soft, so the base course carries the traffic instead of the soil beneath it.
On the ridge side, Forrest City and Colt sit on wind-blown loess up to about 50 feet deep over Tertiary sand, gravel and clay. Loess takes rain readily until it saturates, then sheds water down steep cuts and hollows onto the plain below.
That makes ridge work different. A freshly cut loess slope wants armoring or planting before the next heavy rain, and ridge towns armor cuts, ditches and outlets for the same reason.
Work runs all year in both zones. Wet winter and spring ground is the real limit, and the midsummer dry spell that shrinks and cracks the clay is the best window for base work.
Winters are short and mild with shallow frost. No statewide frost figure is published, and the Arkansas residential code has each jurisdiction set the frost line and requires exterior footings at least 12 inches below undisturbed ground.
Materials Delivered in St. Francis County
SB-2 base is the standard Arkansas base material, also written SB2 or base stone. It is a dense-graded 1 1/2 inch minus crushed stone with the fines left in, so it locks up under a roller.
Table 303-1 sets the aggregate base course gradings as Class 1 through Class 8, and Class 7 is the 1 1/2 inch dense grading sold as SB-2.
Cities and counties write Class 7 into their own street, sidewalk and parking standards, so ask for SB-2 base or Class 7 base depending on whether you are working to a written spec.
Order SB-2 for driveways, parking pads, shed and building pads, and pipe bedding. On Delta clay it goes over fill dirt that raises the pad out of the wet before the base course goes on.
Delivery Across St. Francis County
Ordering happens online. You pick the material, choose a quantity by the ton or by the yard, and select a delivery date at checkout.
Each product page has a calculator if you want to size the load before you order.
A dump truck tips the load on site in one pile. Delivery covers Forrest City, Hughes, Palestine, Wheatley, Colt, Widener and Heth, along with the surrounding county roads.
For a Delta pad, fill dirt and SB-2 base often go in as separate orders so the fill can settle before the base course lands on top. Ridge work near Colt and Forrest City may call for rip rap on a cut or outlet.
Choosing the Right Material
Crittenden County sits in the Arkansas Delta on deep alluvial silt loam, silty clay and heavy clay, the buckshot and gumbo ground the Delta is known for. That is the same heavy Delta ground you find on the St.
Francis County side around Hughes, Palestine, Wheatley and Widener.
Cross County and Lee County each span more than one zone, the Mississippi Alluvial Plain and Crowley's Ridge. St.
Francis County does the same, so the base and drainage choice depends on which ground you are standing on rather than which county line you cross.
On the clay, a dense-graded base like SB-2 carries the load and a clean washed stone like #57 limestone handles drainage. On loess, the same materials work, and slope protection matters more because the ground sheds water fast.
