Arkansas Rock Supply sells bulk gravel and aggregate delivery across Arkansas, ordered online by the ton or by the yard. SB-2 base is the standard Arkansas base material: a dense-graded 1 1/2 inch minus crushed stone with the fines left in so it locks up under a roller.

Arkansas ground changes every hour of driving. Cherty clay over limestone karst in the Ozarks, tight Delta clay with a high water table, and sandy pine uplands over clay all decide how deep a base has to go before anything is placed on it.

SB-2 base is the name to start with for driveways, parking pads, shed and building pads and pipe bedding. Arkansas cities and engineers also write it as Class 7 base.

Class 7 is the 1 1/2 inch dense grading and Class 8 is the 1 inch version, while Section 302 covers select material used as a foundation course underneath.

Cities and counties write Class 7 into their own street, sidewalk and parking standards.

On the coarse end, rip rap armors creek, bayou and lake banks and checks ditches, usually as broken sandstone, limestone or central Arkansas syenite. #4 crushed stone handles heavy drainage, trench bottoms and stabilizing soft ground.

Washed sizes are normal in Arkansas. #57 limestone, also called 57 rock or clean rock, suits French drains, foundation and pipe drainage and concrete aggregate, and 3/4 inch clean limestone works for drainage beds and construction entrances.

Screenings, the Arkansas trade name for crusher fines, bed pavers, flagstone and brick and fill the joints. Arkansas River Rock covers decorative beds, borders and dry creek beds, and Large River Rock goes into heavier decorative work and light bank protection.

For softer ground, Fill Dirt raises low spots and builds a pad up out of the wet before a base course goes on. Shredded Mulch holds moisture in beds and tree rings through an Arkansas summer and keeps bare soil from washing in a thunderstorm.

Ground and Climate Across Arkansas

Base, drive and patio work runs nearly all year here. Wet winter and spring ground, not frozen ground, is what stops a job, and the late-summer dry spell is the easiest window to compact.

In the Ozark Mountains, cherty clay loam sits over limestone and dolostone with rock close to the surface on side slopes, and karst swallows water rather than shedding it. Base depth and drainage matter more than cold.

The Ouachita Mountains carry stony, gravelly loam over sandstone, shale, chert and novaculite, with shallow soils on the ridges and deeper ground in the valleys. Rock is often close enough to the surface that bearing, not frost, sets footings.

Arkansas River Valley ground is deep silt loam and clay on the river bottoms and terraces. Frost is shallow there, and wet clay does more damage to a base than cold does.

Across Central Arkansas, Ouachita foothills run out into coastal plain and river lowlands, with gravelly rocky clay loam, syenite outcrops and deep river silt. The practical winter problem is saturated clay rather than frost.

The Arkansas Delta is deep alluvial silt loam and heavy buckshot and gumbo clay laid down by the Mississippi, St. Francis, White, Cache and Arkansas rivers, flat with a high water table.

Rain simply stands, so raising a pad and draining it comes before surfacing.

The Timberlands and the rest of the coastal plain are deep acid sandy loam and sandy clay over sand, gravel, clay, chalk and marl. Bare sand washes on the uplands, and freezes are short and shallow across south Arkansas.

Arkansas publishes no statewide frost line. The state residential code has each jurisdiction set the figure and requires exterior footings at least 12 inches below undisturbed ground, so ask the local building official rather than assuming a number.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about gravel and aggregate delivery in Arkansas

What is the best base material for a patio in Arkansas?

SB-2 base is the Arkansas answer for a patio, a dense-graded 1 1/2 inch minus crushed stone with the fines left in. Screenings then bed the pavers or flagstone on top of it.

Can I order material for a commercial or contractor job?

Yes. Order online by the ton or by the yard in the quantity the job needs, and pick a delivery date at checkout. Contractors working to a written standard can order SB-2 base under the Class 7 name, which is how Arkansas cities and engineers specify the 1 1/2 inch dense grading.

When is the best time of year to order base material in Arkansas?

Base work runs nearly all year in Arkansas, so the deciding factor is ground moisture rather than temperature. Wet winter and spring ground is what stops a job, and the late-summer dry spell is the easiest window to compact. Order when the ground will take a truck and a roller.
